This means to know who are a person people should know their languages .In other words , languages point out who are the persons, their stories . to stop someone to speak their languages is likely to steal their identity . Furthermore, Gloria called “cultural traitor” people who stop speaking their languages ,and speaking the foreign languages.
The “Mother tongue” expresses the limitation of the imperfect English in the society . People tend to see people who speak imperfect English as one way which means they focus on the negative part of their English ,and they do not take people who speak imperfect English seriously in the society.Tan realized in her experience that she was using standard English in her book, workplace, school, but she was using “limited” English with her mother .I can relate that to a video that I saw recently “the danger of a single story” when people see other people English as imperfect they Rob their dignity ,they make them feel uncomfortable in the society.
